- Trust vs. Mistrust → look towards caregiver for stability and consistency of care
- If it’s predictable and reliable, then they will develop a sense of trust and security even when threatened
- Autonomy vs. Shame
- Sense of personal control over physical skills and sense of independence
- If children are encouraged and supported in increased independence, they will become more confident and secure in their own ability to survive in the world
- Initiative vs. Guilt
- Children assert themselves more frequently through directing play and social interaction, develop sense of initiative and feel secure in their ability to lead others and make decisions
- Industry vs. Inferiority
- Need to win approval by demonstrating specific competencies, developing sense of pride, begin to feel industrious and confident in their ability to achieve goals
- Identity vs. Role Confusion
- Searching for a sense of self and personal identity, through intense exploration of personal values, beliefs and goals
- Intimacy vs. Isolation
- Forming intimate, loving relationships with other people
- Generativity vs. Stagnation
- Making your mark on the world through creating or nurturing things that will outlast an individual
- Success leads to feelings of usefulness and accomplishment, failure results in shallow involvement in the world
- By failing to find a way to contribute, we become stagnant and feel unproductive → may feel disconnected with their community and with society as a whole
- Ego Integrity vs. Despair
- Contemplate our accomplishments and develop integrity if we see ourselves as leading a successful life
