1. Trust vs. Mistrust → look towards caregiver for stability and consistency of care
    1. If it’s predictable and reliable, then they will develop a sense of trust and security even when threatened
  2. Autonomy vs. Shame
    1. Sense of personal control over physical skills and sense of independence
      1. If children are encouraged and supported in increased independence, they will become more confident and secure in their own ability to survive in the world
  3. Initiative vs. Guilt
    1. Children assert themselves more frequently through directing play and social interaction, develop sense of initiative and feel secure in their ability to lead others and make decisions
  4. Industry vs. Inferiority
    1. Need to win approval by demonstrating specific competencies, developing sense of pride, begin to feel industrious and confident in their ability to achieve goals
  5. Identity vs. Role Confusion
    1. Searching for a sense of self and personal identity, through intense exploration of personal values, beliefs and goals
  6. Intimacy vs. Isolation
    1. Forming intimate, loving relationships with other people
  7. Generativity vs. Stagnation
    1. Making your mark on the world through creating or nurturing things that will outlast an individual
    2. Success leads to feelings of usefulness and accomplishment, failure results in shallow involvement in the world
    3. By failing to find a way to contribute, we become stagnant and feel unproductive → may feel disconnected with their community and with society as a whole
  8. Ego Integrity vs. Despair
    1. Contemplate our accomplishments and develop integrity if we see ourselves as leading a successful life
